Malcolm X Plaza

New York Renames Central Park Subway Station in Honor of Malcolm X

Malcolm X Plaza is here in a powerful tribute to one of America’s most influential civil rights leaders. Governor Kathy Hochul has officially renamed the 110th Street–Central Park North subway station to 110th Street–Malcolm X Plaza. The announcement took place during Harlem Week 2025, a month-long celebration of the neighborhood’s rich culture and history.

The renaming coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. Malcolm X, who lived, worked, and organized in Harlem, is remembered as a fearless advocate for Black empowerment.

“Malcolm X was a visionary whose words and actions continue to inspire generations. Renaming this station ensures his name and legacy remain firmly rooted in the heart of Harlem,” Governor Hochul said during the ceremony.

Community leaders, activists, and residents gathered for the unveiling, which featured music, speeches, and reflections on Malcolm X’s impact. Harlem was not just a backdrop to his activism but a central hub for his speeches, rallies, and organizing.

The new station signage features bold lettering and historical context panels. This aligns with a broader city initiative to honor historic Black leaders. Similar projects are underway to highlight the contributions of activists, artists, and educators who shaped the city’s social fabric.

A Legacy Carved in Harlem’s Streets
Malcolm X’s connection to Harlem ran deep. From speaking at street corners to leading rallies at the Audubon Ballroom. He used the neighborhood as both a base and a beacon for political change.

“Every time I pass through this station, I’ll be reminded that our history matters. This is more than a name—it’s a message.”
