On December 4, 1969, 21-year-old Black revolutionary Fred Hampton was murdered in his bed by the Chicago Police Department. The police raided an apartment located at 2337 W. Monroe in Chicago at 4:30 a.m. While the occupants were resting, the police kicked down the door and began firing.
Ballistics evidence revealed that more than 90 shots were fired during the incident, and four members of the Black Panther Party were found sprawled on the floor with injuries. Fred Hampton was killed while lying in bed next to his eight-month-pregnant girlfriend.
The police were acting under the orders of Edward Hanrahan, the Cook County State’s Attorney, who stated in a press conference that the police were ambushed by the Panthers when they arrived at the apartment to serve a search warrant. Despite the fact that this claim was proven to be a complete fabrication, no one was ever indicted for the assassination of Fred Hampton.
