  • 1652: John Johnson, a free African American, was granted 550 acres in Northampton County, Virginia, for importing eleven persons to work as indentured servants 5.
  • 1775: Lemuel Haynes, Epheram Blackman, and Primas Black participated in the first aggressive action of American forces against the British, helping capture Fort Ticonderoga as members of Ethan Allen’s Green Mountain Boys 15.
  • 1815: Henry Walton Bibb was born a slave in Shelby County, Kentucky. He later escaped to Canada and became an active abolitionist 5.
  • 1837: P.B.S. Pinchback was born in Macon, Georgia, to a White plantation owner and a free Black woman. He became a significant figure in Louisiana politics during the Reconstruction era 3.
