Pizza Hut is laying off over 1,200 drivers before California’s minimum wage increases to 20 dollars an hour. According to Business Insider California is the second most expensive state to live in behind Hawaii. The average California resident pays at least 2800 dollars a month on bills. Now that the minimum wage is increasing from 16 to 20 dollars Pizza Hut is handing out pink slips. One driver said Pizza Hut has offered him a 400-dollar severance package if stayed on until February. The driver has driven for Pizza Hut for the past 9 years and doesn’t know what he’s going to do after the cuts are made.
The company plans on using apps like Uber Eats and DoorDash to replace their drivers. The move is going to put several black and brown people on the employment line in California. A spokesperson for Pizza Hut stated that the move was just business, was is exactly why I hope these drivers have a plan B.
